Construction Terms
811 / One-Call — The national "call before you dig" number. Notifies utility companies to come mark underground lines before excavation begins.
Asphalt Overlay — Applying a new layer of asphalt over existing pavement.
Base Course — The layer of material (gravel, crushed rock) placed under the surface course (asphalt or concrete).
Batch Plant — A facility that mixes concrete or asphalt.
CF (Cubic Feet) — Volume measurement. 27 CF = 1 CY.
CY (Cubic Yards) — Volume measurement commonly used for concrete and grading. 1 CY = 27 cubic feet.
Change Order — A modification to the original scope of work on a contract.
Compaction — Compressing soil, gravel, or asphalt to increase density and stability.
Curb & Gutter — The concrete edge along a roadway that channels water drainage.
DOT — Department of Transportation. State-level agency that oversees road construction standards and permits.
Flatwork — Horizontal concrete surfaces — sidewalks, driveways, floors, patios.
Grading — Leveling or shaping the ground surface to prepare for construction.
LF (Linear Feet) — Length measurement for items like curbing, pipe, or fencing.
Lien Release — A legal document from a contractor or subcontractor waiving their right to file a lien (claim) against the property. Often required before payment.
Locate — See "811." The physical act of marking underground utilities, or the ticket/record tracking the request.
Milling — Grinding and removing the top layer of existing asphalt before resurfacing.
MUTCD — Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The federal standard for signs, signals, and road markings, including traffic control plans.
Overlay — See "Asphalt Overlay."
Paving — Laying asphalt or concrete on a prepared surface.
Permit — Authorization from a municipality or government agency to perform specific work in a specific area.
Proctor — A soil compaction test that determines the optimal moisture content for maximum density.
Resurfacing — Removing worn pavement and replacing it with new material.
ROW (Right of Way) — The legal right to use a specific strip of land, typically for a road or utility. Construction in the ROW usually requires permits.
Schedule of Values — A detailed breakdown of the contract price by line item. Used for progress billing.
SF (Square Feet) — Area measurement.
SY (Square Yards) — Area measurement. 1 SY = 9 SF. Commonly used for paving quantities.
Subgrade — The native soil beneath the road structure.
Ton — Weight measurement (2,000 lbs). Asphalt is typically measured and billed in tons.
Traffic Control Plan (TCP) — A documented plan for managing traffic through or around a construction zone. Required by most DOTs and municipalities.
App-Specific Terms
Activation — The process of setting up a division on a new job. Walks through permit/locate requirements, task selection, and initial scheduling.
Billing Item — A line item on a job that will become part of an invoice. Created automatically from approved measurements, permit/locate costs, or manually.
Crew Assignment — A record linking a crew to a job's division for a specific date range. The fundamental unit of scheduling.
Daily Log / Dailies — The field report filled out at the end of each workday recording labor, work performed, weather, and issues.
Division — A type of work the company performs (e.g., Asphalt, Concrete, Grading). The primary organizational unit within a company.
Hold Reason — Why a division is on hold (usually a required permit or locate hasn't been satisfied yet).
Impersonation — An admin feature that lets Construxion Pro support staff log in as any user to troubleshoot issues.
Job — A single construction project with a location, client, and assigned divisions.
Measurement Completion — A submitted batch of actual measurements on a task, pending or approved.
Price Sheet — A set of prices for billing items. Company defaults can be overridden per-client.
Push Notification — A browser notification that appears even when the app isn't open. Only triggered for high-priority events.
Renewal Chain — A linked series of permits or locates where each renewal is a child of the previous version.
Task Template — A division-level configuration defining what type of work is performed and how it's measured (input dimensions, output units, conversion factors).
TC (Traffic Control) — The management of road closures, signs, flagging, and barriers during construction.
Working Days — The configured days of the week when work occurs (default Mon-Fri). Affects schedule calculations.
